Our lives fly well—white specks with faces
Running out against blue. While far below
We stand staring after them,
Trying to remember what they were like,
These prize possessions of ours,
Unraveling so cheerfully before our eyes.
By now we are winding in the runaway spools,
For all we are worth. Whatever was there
Has begun to recede, like the dead stars,
Faster than the speed of their light
Can reach back to us here,
Where we hang on these empty strings.
